Ostracism \Os"tra*cism\, n. [Gr. ?, fr. ? to ostracize. See

   1. (Gr. Antiq.) Banishment by popular vote, -- a means
      adopted at Athens to rid the city of a person whose talent
      and influence gave umbrage.
