Ghastly \Ghast"ly\, a. [Compar. {Ghastlier}; superl.
   {Ghastliest}.] [OE. gastlich, gastli, fearful, causing fear,
   fr. gasten to terrify, AS. g[ae]stan. Cf. {Aghast}, {Gast},
   {Gaze}, {Ghostly}.]
   1. Like a ghost in appearance; deathlike; pale; pallid;
      dismal.
