Despotism \Des"po*tism\, n. [Cf. F. despotisme.]
   1. The power, spirit, or principles of a despot; absolute
      control over others; tyrannical sway; tyranny. ``The

   2. A government which is directed by a despot; a despotic
      monarchy; absolutism; autocracy.
