Cathedral \Ca*the"dral\, n. [LL. cathedralis (sc. ecclesia): cf.
   F. cath['e]drale. See {Cathedra}.]
   The principal church in a diocese, so called because in it
   the bishop has his official chair (Cathedra) or throne.
