Mow \Mow\, v. t. [imp. {Mowed}; p. p. {Mowed} or {Mown}; p. pr.
& vb. n. {Mowing}.] [OE. mowen, mawen, AS. m[=a]wan; akin to
D. maaijen, G. m["a]hen, OHG. m[=a]jan, Dan. meie, L. metere
to reap, mow, Gr. ?. Cf. {Math}, {Mead} a meadow, {Meadow}.]
1. To cut down, as grass, with a scythe or machine.
2. To cut the grass from; as, to mow a meadow.
3. To cut down; to cause to fall in rows or masses, as in
mowing grass; -- with down; as, a discharge of grapeshot
mows down whole ranks of men.
Mowing \Mow"ing\, n.
1. The act of one who, or the operation of that which, mows.
2. Land from which grass is cut; meadow land.
{Mowing machine}, an agricultural machine armed with knives
or blades for cutting standing grass, etc. It is drawn by
a horse or horses, or propelled by steam.
